The first snow of the season is always a time for stoke. I am going on 25 years of shredding and I get the same feelings of excitement and anxiety every year at this time. I get excited to think about riding pillows of pow and the slashes on 2 foot days of fresh with the crew. I get anxiety when I realize how far snowboarding has come, yet there are those still taking it further. As soon as a shredder can say they just got double corks, the next life threatening idea that some young shredder will come up with is about to be born. Even though many of us say we have nothing to prove, the fact remains we do. It is hard to sit back and do the same tricks that have been in the bag since we started. That is what is so amazing about snowboarding. No matter the age or the ability, it still pushes the limits of creativity and ability continually. It is what keeps us young year after year. Even though the body slows down, the mind is still ready to push the limits.
So it’s time to pull the new Blank board out of the wrapper or detune the edges and put a fresh coat of wax on last year’s board in anticipation for the first day out of another epic season. I look forward to hearing the stories of cops kicking snowboarders out of handrail spots in the city and the tricks that went down on a super deep day. Ride on.
